The Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Joy Group had a busy spring with several activities including the annual picnic, Jubilee Conference, Senior Citizen Sunday featuring a catered lunch, and the Associational Gathering also featuring a catered lunch.

These activities began when the Joy Group gathered for their monthly meeting at Laura Walker State Park.  The 43 folks attending enjoyed a picnic lunch of hamburgers and hotdogs with all the trimmings including dessert of cake and ice cream.  After lunch the cornhole boards were set up and a tournament began culminating in first and second place winning teams.  Members also enjoyed sitting around in their lawn chairs and visiting with each other.

The second activity was the Johnny Hunt Jubilee Conference in Myrtle Beach, SC held April 30 through May 2.  Pleasant Valley was well represented with 36 in attendance.  The conference featured the inspirational preaching of Rev. Johnny Hunt of Woodstock First Baptist and Rev. Mike Whitson of First Baptist, Indian Trail, NC.  A highlight of the conference was the Tuesday evening session featuring the former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee as the keynote speaker.  Entertainment was provided by the Lefevre Quartet, Guy Penrod, the McKameys, Blackwood Brothers, Tim Lovelace, and Allison Speer.  At the conclusion of the conference the group returned home with revived hearts and spirits.  A special thanks to Pleasant Valley Joy Group member Porter Johns for the excellent driving on the Kelly Tours bus.

The third event was Senior Citizen Sunday at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church on May 6.  The morning worship featured special music from the Joy Group Choir, led by Marilyn Thornhill.  The group sang two favorite hymns, “Lord Lead Me On” and “Take It to the Lord in Prayer”.   Special singing was also provided by a trio, consisting of Rhonda Tucker, Marilyn Thornhill, and Wesley Crews who sang “I’ve Never Been Sorry”.  Pleasant Valley Pastor, the Rev. David Marshall preached a senior citizen centered sermon from Psalm 71 entitled “A Psalm for Senior Saints”.  After the morning worship service, 78 of the Joy Group members enjoyed a delicious catered meal provided by Cindy Altman and HoneyBuns.  Members celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in April and May were recognized and treated to a gift of candy and first place in the serving line.

The fourth and final activity was the Associational Gathering hosted by Second Baptist on Monday, May 7, with 31 folks from Pleasant Valley attending.  This activity featured gospel singing by the Chuck Wagon Gang and a delicious barbecue lunch provided by Second Baptist.  A good time was had by all attendees and Second Baptist is to be commended for doing such a great job each year in hosting this activity for local senior citizens.

After a busy spring, members are now looking forward to their next meeting Thursday, June 21, which will be held at the church.  Special speaker for this meeting will be Mrs. Briana Marshall, the lovely wife of our pastor.
